Whether you are an entrepreneur, a business owner or a freelancer, riddle me this – when was the last time you asked for help at work or at home? Do you overthink situations, replaying the impending conversation in your head over and over, then when you eventually make that call, the nerves take over and you are back to square one – unable to ask for help?  
 
While statistically speaking, the leading cause of business failure is more often than not cash flow, there is more to the struggles being a business owner.  
 
But sometimes people don’t ask for help because they fear being labelled as weak or they don’t want to owe anyone. While being self-reliant, independent and a person of action are key to entrepreneurship and success, I believe everybody could use a hand every now and then to smooth things out – including you. 

On September 12 it’s R U OK? Day and so I’m asking you – are you OK within your business. Business can be a struggle but you don’t need to struggle alone.   
 
I agree with American financier Ziad Abdelnour’s words: “Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it.”  

When and why should you ask for help?

  • Forgotten meetings, surpassed deadlines, unpaid invoices and total chaos at work.
  • When you spend mammoth hours at work but reap very little rewards and benefits.
  • When you know that you do not enjoy part of your work that is “boring” and end up never finishing it.
  • When something bothers you but you are unable to figure out what the problem is.
  • When a business grows fast and you are unable to delegate, outsource or let go.

Remember, we cannot do everything on our own. Setting up and running a business requires immense passion and dedication, but more people, hands and minds make the difference. Next time you find yourself stuck, do not hesitate to reach out and allow someone to help you re-organise and keep you sane.
